U.S. flag collection to continue year-round
Cedar Rapids, IA – September 27, 2010 – Responding to excellent public participation in this year’s Freedom Festival “Flown with Pride, Retired with Dignity” U.S. flag collection program, festival officials announced today that the program will be a year-round initiative.
Launched on Flag Day (June 14) this year, the festival’s initiative to provide residents and businesses an opportunity to retire faded, torn or otherwise damaged U.S. flags yielded more than 350 flags in less than a week. “We initially intended to conduct the program for the duration of Freedom Festival 2010,” noted Freedom Festival executive director, Janet Wilhelm. “However, more flags continue to be dropped off at the festival office, and judging by the number of phone calls we’ve received we know there are many more to come.
“Faded, torn or otherwise damaged U.S. flags ready for retirement may be dropped off any time at the Freedom Festival office at 226 2nd St. SE,” she added. “A flag collection box also will be located in the Armstrong Center Food Court on Saturday, December 4, during this year’s Fire & Ice Festival and the 6th annual Freedom Festival Chili Challenge ”
Planning for Freedom Festival 2011 is well underway. Next year’s festival dates and official artwork design will be announced in early October.
