Chautauqua in Cedar Rapids
Saturday, June 28, 2008 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Produced by the Carl & Mary Koehler History Center
Chatauqua, pronounced "shuh-TAWK-wuh," is a community-based, cultural and social movement that started in the 1870s and flourished in America until the mid-1920s. During this time there existed hundreds of touring Chautauquas that presented lectures, dance, music, drama, and other forms of "cultural enrichment."
Performing in tents across the country, Chautauquas were once called "the most American thing in America" by Teddy Roosevelt.
This year the recreation of Chautauqua will feature three presentations. Pvt. Ralph Tripp will tell of his Civil War experiences 50 years after the war ended. Closing the program will be a very special guest speaker -- President Abraham Lincoln.
