The Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival Announces Virtual Plans for 2020

Cedar Rapids, IA (6/12/20) For 37 Years, the Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival has been a staple in our community - providing free and low cost programming and events leading up to and including the 4th of July Celebration. Although there won’t be large in-person events this year, the Festival is excited to announce 2020 Programming:

  • Medallion Hunt beginning June 22nd
  • Drive-Thru Pancake Breakfast on June 27th
  • A 1-hour Virtual Celebration Video to debut July 1st
  • Flashback of past Parades and Fireworks on KCRG 9.2 on July 4th

The Freedom Festival, with support from Presenting Sponsor Hy-Vee, will host a Drive-thru Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, June 27th. Drive-thru the ImOn Ice Arena parking lot (1100 Rockford Road SW) between 8-10 a.m. and receive a packaged pancake breakfast for just $5, cash only. Meals will be cooked on site thanks to long-time event sponsors Built By Pros and CR/IC Building Trades. For each meal purchased, customers will receive a free 2020 Commemorative Freedom Festival Button which includes a Hy-Vee coupon book valued at $35.

A long-time festival favorite, the Medallion Hunt, will begin Monday, June 22nd, 2020! Clues will be released to the Freedom Festival website at (www.freedomfestival.com), the Festival’s Facebook Page, and during the KCRG newscasts. One new clue will be announced per day until the medallion (a 4-inch acrylic disc) has been found in the Cedar Rapids metro area. The prize will once again be a $500 Hy-Vee Gift Card, courtesy of Hy-Vee.

Additional virtual experiences can be found on the Freedom Festival Facebook page in the days leading up to the 4th of July, including a mini-concert by Alisabeth Von Presley on Tuesday, June 23rd and a 1-hour virtual Celebration video watch party on Wednesday, July 1st, produced by MC22 (Powered by Mediacom). The video will be a combination of history and look through the years of past Festivals with interviews, music, pictures, video from Chuck Long, sponsor mentions, and clips from last year’s parade and fireworks.

Tune in to KCRG 9.2 throughout the day on Saturday, July 4th for a Freedom Festival Flashback—parade and fireworks from previous years will be re-broadcast for all to enjoy! (schedule available on Facebook)
