David Chapel

1942 - 1946

David Gordon Chapel was born April 2nd, 1922, in Cedar Rapids, IA to Orrie and Lois Chapel.  David graduated from McKinley High School and enlisted in the Marine Corps in September 1942.  He completed basic training In San Diego, CA, then went on to the Hawaiian Islands for additional training and was with the first group of Marines to land in the Solomon Islands area in February 1943. David served 24 months in the South Pacific as an aerial defense sharpshooter and was credited with shooting down more than a dozen Japanese bombers.  The latter part of his tour was spent in Japan. On November 20th, 1944, David married Mary Leota Jane Gardner in Cedar Rapids.  They were blessed with two sons, Jeffrey and Randy Chapel; 2 grandchildren, Brett Chapel and Stephanie Chapel Helle; and 2 great-grandsons, Aidan and Carson Helle.  He worked at LeFebure Corporation for 44 years. David passed away on May 11th, 2013, at the age of 91.
