Donald Dixson
ARMY
1967 - 1969
Donald Dixson was born in Moberly, Missouri, where he grew up on a farm. From an early age, he knew there was more to life than the farm, and he eventually moved to the St. Louis area to be with the love of his life. Donald was drafted into the U.S. Army in November 1967, stepping into service at a time when the nation was deeply divided and the demands placed on young soldiers were immense. He completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood and continued his military preparation at Fort Sill, where he trained in Artillery Fire Direction Control. Recognized for his leadership potential, Donald was selected for the Army’s newly created Noncommissioned Officer Candidate Course, often referred to as the “Shake ’n Bake” program. Upon completion, he was promoted to Specialist Fifth Class and soon deployed to Vietnam. In Vietnam, Donald served with the 39th Engineer Battalion in S-2 Intelligence. After six months, he assumed the role of Battalion Liaison to the 25th Infantry Division in Duc Pho, a position that required trust, clear communication, and steady judgment under challenging circumstances. Donald returned home in November 1969 and was honorably discharged from the Army, carrying with him the experiences, responsibilities, and quiet strength shaped by his service. Donald now resides in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with the love of his life, who missed him dearly during his deployment. He is the proud father of three children and grandfather to six grandchildren. Donald is also a leader with Quilts of Valor through the Freedom Stitchers of Iowa, where he volunteers his time making and presenting quilts to veterans in appreciation of their service.
