Daniel E. Spahn

Daniel Spahn was born December 30, 1952 in Dubuque, IA. to Ervin and Denise Spahn. Daniel was the middle of five children. After graduating from Wahlert High School in 1971, Daniel attended boot camp at NTC San Diego then Aviation Electronics Technician School at NATTC Millington Tn. After graduation, Daniel received orders to VAW-111 det2 at NAS North Island Ca. Daniel Deployed to Vietnam in May 1973 with VAW-111 det2 aboard the USS Hancock CVA-19 returning in January 1974. In December 1974, Daniel deployed to Vietnam with RVAW110 det2 aboard USS Coral Sea CVA-43 participating in “Operation Frequent Wind” (evacuation of Saigon) and Recovery of the US flagged merchant ship SS Mayaguez and her crew. The countries final action in Southeast Asia. Daniel was awarded a Navy Unit Citation, 2 Meritorious Unit Citations, Good Conduct medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal, returning home in June 1975. After decommissioning his squadron, Daniel received orders to NAS Kingsville TX, where he was honorably discharged as an Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class in June of 1977.

Daniel married Deborah Koeller in Dubuque, IA on September 1st 1972, they have 3 children Teather, Kellie, and Benjamin all raised in Cedar Rapids, IA. Daniel spent his career in Cedar Rapids as a Field Service engineer for various company’s, repairing everything from main frame computers to MRI and CT. Retiring in 2018. Daniel is blessed with 5 grandchildren, Jacob, Jonathon, and Isabella in Marion, IA and Edward and Thomas in Atlanta, GA.
